several years back i was travelling through chiangrai, a sleepy border town. maybe i shouldn't call it sleepy, but laid back. you do not see the hectic movements of people. in the afternoon things seemed to slow town even much more.
my pal was a heavy set 6 footer. we called a bicycle cab, those that have the seats in front and cycled from the back. the driver was a scrawny middle age man, about 50. my partner told wisely that we better take two cabs. but he insisted to pick both of us. for a distance of about 1km he charged us S$1. we gave him S$2 instead.
but what happened was totally unexpected. this man knelt down in front of us and started praying. we could not believe ourselves that that S$2 meant so much to him.
it was an eye opener. when we looked around, we could hardly see any passengers available. maybe he was lucky to have two passengers for the day.
